ITP (Internet Telephone Provider), our "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award" winner offers a more extensive selection of plan options than most VoIP service providers. They include three residential services with one line and three with two lines. A home office plan is also available. For purposes of this comparison, we’ve used the residential Global Unlimited plan because it corresponds closer to the other rated plans that do the other options. For details of other options, consult ITP’s web site.
ITP’s Global Unlimited plan is $24.99 per month for unlimited calling to the United States and Canada. Their charge, unlike many competitors includes calls to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Setting ITP apart from other carriers is the extensive international calling that is included in the plans monthly charge. Several other plans we’ve evaluated include calling to a few countries in western Europe or the far east. ITP offers these same countries and adds some less common ones including Germany, Austria, Australia, Israel and several others. Russia and some Latin American countries are even included but look carefully if these locations are of interest to you because only a few select cities are included in their coverage. In general, however, the international features offered by ITP are exceptional.
ITP charges a non-refundable activation fee of $29.95 but there is no cancellation fee. A router/telephone adapter is provided free of charge upon activation. Of course, it must be returned if the account is cancelled or the entire cost of the equipment will be charged.
Like other VoIP providers, ITP’s included feature set has all of those extras that traditional phone companies charge extra for. They include CallBack (*69), Call Forwarding, CallerID, and Call Waiting. The plan also features Voicemail, CallerID block, 411 Directory Assistance, Speed Dial, 3-way calling, and Do Not Disturb, a feature that sends calls directly to voicemail.
Features available at additional cost include Fax, eFax, a Calling Card, domestic and international virtual numbers, and toll-free numbers.
The installation and setup process is the same for ITP as it is for other VoIP services. You must have a high-speed internet connection already in place. Plug the supplied router/adapter into the internet modem then plug your phone into the router/adapter. You then use your phone the same way you would with a conventional landline phone.
ITP’s web site is more informative and comprehensive that most of its competitors. It has a good FAQ section and offers both email and toll-free telephone support. We called their customer service and got to a live operator within a minute who was polite and well informed.
If you’re looking for a phone service that includes calling to a wide range of international numbers, ITP could be the service for you. The key is making sure that the included countries and cities are ones that you actually use. As with other providers, they also offer calling to other countries but beware of the per minute fees. They vary widely from one service to another and just because a particular provider offers a great rate to one country is no indication that they do to another.
