Jajah offers a different approach to VoIP than other services. It seeks to combine the convenience of using a standalone telephone, either landline or cellular, to connect to other phones but to leverage the power of the internet to do so more inexpensively than other methods. The service is still in its infancy but for certain users its unique products will be a perfect fit. We expect Jajah’s appeal to broaden with technological and market maturity.

The service doesn’t replace conventional telephone service but can make long distance calling less expensive. It does not provide access to 911 emergency calling.

Jajah Web

There are three ways to use Jajah. The principal service is known as Jajah Web which begins by logging onto the internet with a computer; however, it isn’t computer-to-computer calling like Skype. Rather, Jajah features a concept referred to as web-activated telephony. The caller enters his own phone number and the number which is being called into the Jajah web interface and presses the call button. Momentarily, the caller’s phone rings and, after a brief wait, the phone of the person being called rings. At that point the connection is complete and the call goes on as with conventional phone service.

The Jajah service is available in about 20 countries including the United States and Canada, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and most of Western Europe. Such calls between Jajah subscribers are free. Calls to those countries to people who don’t subscribe to Jajah are typically less expensive than other services, generally about three to four cents per minute. The price is the same to landline or mobile phones in the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Calls to mobile phones in other than those five locations are much higher.

In order to place paid calls using Jajah Web, you must purchase credits in advance. The same applies for call made using Jajah Direct or Jajah Mobile Web, below.

Jajah Direct

Jajah Direct doesn’t require the use of a computer to place a call but it is useful to set up a Jajah address book online before using the service. To connect, you call a local Jajah access number and select one a contact you’ve entered in your address book or dial the number you’re calling. You connect at Jajah’s generally lower per minute rate. The limiting factor at this time is that there are a very limited number of local access number, e.g. eleven in the United States and three each Canada and France. That means that you could also be making a long distance call just to get to the Jajah access number. Of course, if you’re able to take advantage of a calling plans included minutes, you’re all set.

Keep in mind that wireless providers charge exorbitant rates for overseas roaming. If, for example, you have a U.S. wireless plan and are traveling in Europe, calling Jajah's "local" number would incur overseas roaming charges which most people will find unacceptable.

Jajah Mobile

When you have a Jajah account, you can access Jajah on web enabled mobile phone by going to their mobile web site and signing in. You then have one click calling to numbers in your Jajah address book or you can dial other numbers manually. If travelling overseas, make sure that you're aware of your wireless carrier's charges for accessing the internet.

Features:   Excellent

Jajah lacks the typical features that are a part of most VoIP services such as CallerID and Call Waiting. It does, however, give you the ability to send SMS text messages from your desktop, to schedule calls in advance and to make conference calls. You can also place a Jajah Button in public locations such as a web site, blog, or on-going auction to allow users to call you while keeping your phone number private.

Ease of Installation/Setup:   Excellent

Setting up Jajah is simply a matter of visiting their web site and signing up. There’s no application to download though there are applications available for some mobile phones that make the interface easier to use.

Help/Support:   Excellent

Jajah’s web site features FAQ’s and a user forum. It also provides access to form driven email to ask specific questions.

Summary:

Jajah stands alone among VoIP telephone providers. Jajah Web doesn’t seek to replace conventional phone service but to make it much less expensive using its unique web-activated telephony approach to making the VoIP connection. Using Jajah’s other services, Jajah Direct and Jajah Mobile Web also offer alternatives that can be economical if they meet your personal domestic and international long distance calling needs.
