TopTenREVIEWS - Gold Award - Awarded for excellence in design, usability and feature set

With services ranging from single residential lines to hosted PBX systems for corporations, Phone Power is one of the most well-rounded VoIP services. It has rock-solid features, impressive performance and wide-ranging functionality. Its cancellation fee is higher than cheaper yearly plans, but considering its good customer satisfaction rating, it’s not likely that you’ll be terminating your contract with this TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner.

Phone Power has two basic plans, both of which boast unlimited minutes: Unlimited World and Unlimited U.S. and Canada. Plans are cheaper if you choose an annual or 2-year plan, though the cancellation fee is high. Calls to Canada and Puerto Rico plus 60 minutes of international calling a month are included. You can keep your existing phone number or choose one in an area code different from the one you actually reside in.

Nearly all the services we reviewed say their unlimited plans take "reasonable use" into consideration, and many customer complaints we've seen across the board stem from not knowing what "reasonable use" means. Phone Power is up-front about it. All incoming minutes are unlimited and the service offers a high outbound calling threshold of 5,000 minutes, or an average of three hours of outbound phone time a day – plenty for most home and small business users. Plus, you get 60 free minutes of international calling each month.

Our only real complaint with Phone Power stems from its cancellation policies. If you sign up for the service and terminate the contract early, you are subject to a $99 fee. Cancellation fees are standard among VoIP services, but Phone Power’s is much higher than most of the other VoIP providers we reviewed. If you are unsure about committing to Phone Power, you can choose a month-to-month plan.

Phone Power’s voice over IP service is stocked with 50 calling features, including voicemail, caller ID and speed dial. It also includes call transferring, call return and Enhanced 911, or e911. This feature works just as 911 normally does, but it also automatically sends the dispatcher your name and address, which is especially important if you are under duress or otherwise unable to communicate that vital information.

Need to find community services in your area? Phone Power provides 211 Community Service, which helps you find reputable after-school programs or specialized care programs for the elderly, as well as other services in your area you might not be able to easily find in a phone book search. 411 directory assistance comes with a per-call charge, however.

This internet phone provider also includes features ideal for businesses, such as call logs for analyzing your phone traffic and Find Me, a feature that allows incoming phone calls to forward to several telephones if the previous line is not answered.

With the mobile app, you can make VoIP calls on your smartphone. This proves useful when you’re on the go and need to make long-distance or international calls that would be cheaper through the VoIP service than your mobile carrier. You can also use the app to place calls through a tablet.

While many of its competitors charge for a second phone line, Phone Power provides one at no additional cost. This is a terrific feature for families with heavy phone use or situations where you have to be able to leave your line open to receive calls, such as with a home business. Combined with the free conference call feature, it makes it easy for colleagues to have business meetings, parents to chat with kids at college or gaming groups to coordinate their latest raid – all while leaving a line free to receive important calls or order out for pizza.

You'll have to pay extra if you want a toll-free or virtual phone number, something to consider especially if you need them for a home business.
