TinCanTalk is a basic VoIP telephone service that offers most of the benefits of other providers but comes up lacking in some key areas.
TinCanTalk’s Premium Plan provides unlimited calling to the continental United States and Canada for $24.95 monthly. That’s a pretty typical charge but for that fee many other services include some combination of calling also to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and more and more frequently, a number of other countries.
In addition to the monthly fee, TinCanTalk charge both a $25.00 activation fee and a $25.00 charge for cancelling the service. Like all VoIP services, an Analog Telephone Adapter, ATA, is required and TinCanTalk provides it without charge. Predictably, if you fail to return it when cancelling the plan, you’d be charged $79 for the device.
One of VoIP’s selling points in general over traditional telephone service is the array of features that are included in the fee for which the phone company charges extra. Standard features with TinCanTalk include CallerID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and Call Transfer. It also features, Call Return (*69), Last Number Redial, Speed Dial, Anonymous Call Reject, 3-Way Calling, and Voicemail. A rather unusual included feature is the ability to forward all incoming calls to an email address.
The process for installing and setting up TinCanTalk is typical of other VoIP services. You must first have a broadband internet connection in place. The adapter which they supply is plugged into the broadband modem and your phone is then connected to the adapter. You can then use the phone just as you would with a traditional phone service.
inCanTalk’s web site is straight forward and provides a helpful FAQ section. The company also features 24/7 tech support by toll-free phone and email. This is a bonus as 24/7 tech support is unusual among VoIP phone services.
Saving money compared to traditional phone companies is the number one selling for VoIP in general and you can certainly do that with TinCanTalk. The downside to this service is that it charges similar or higher prices as do higher ranked VoIP service but includes calls to notably fewer locations.
